GET URINE STAINS AND ODOR OUT

It’s happened again: the tell tale padding of small feet, then the sound of dribbling water

(sometimes a cascade) onto the carpet. If you have anxious kids, sooner or later you’ll have a bed-wetter (or a floor wetter) and you’ll have to deal with urine stains and smells.

Why is urine so hard to clean from carpets and floors and furniture? Because urine is made up of water and uric acid crystals which are insoluble. The best way to deal with it is to attack the mess immediately ( yes, even at 3:00 AM) before it sinks down into carpet pads or permeates flooring materials.

Febreeze can help with the odor, but not the stain.  

Baking soda may neutralize the odor a bit.

The problem with using many general carpet cleaning products is that they produce a chemical smell in the carpet which is similar to the composition of the urine, so it may act as a “PEE- HERE” sign to animals in the house.

BUT TRY THIS:

FIRST: BLOT THE AREA AS DRY AS YOU CAN GET IT WITH A WHITE TOWEL. WHEN NO MORE LIQUID SOAKS INTO THE TOWEL, APPLY WHATEVER CLEANING SOLUTION YOU HAVE DECIDED TO USE.

            This is where it gets tricky. Did you know there is a website (and a product) called planeturine?  I mean, that’s where I want to spend my next vacation.

There are several products to remove urine stains and smells. The enzyme-based ones seem to work the best because they deal with the uric acid crystals.

There is a VERY medicinal product I believe is called CL3 or something like that, but its residual smell tells everyone there is a problem.

Products made to get out pet stains and odor will work on human urine as well. Another natural method is to spray a mixture of ¼ cup vinegar and 32 oz water onto the area. Gently agitate the area with the back of a plastic spoon or something comparable. If you rub too hard, you’ll disrupt the fibers of the carpet and the stain will become permanent. Then blot with a white towel until the stain and odor are gone. ( or until the process stops working) Then layer several towels on the damp area and weight it with a book or something else with some heft. This should “wick” out the remaining odor and stain. You may have to repeat the process. AND KEEP IN MIND THAT WITH SOME CARPET OR MATRESS FIBERS, THE STAIN MIGHT BE PERMANENT ANYWAY)

IF THIS DOESN’T WORK:

Mix half vinegar/half water with a bit of Pinesol and spray the area. Repeat the above steps.

IF stain and odor persist, you’ll probably have to take up the flooring in that area and replace it. WHATEVER YOU DO, ATTACK THE PROBLEM AS SOON AS YOU ARE AWARE OF IT.  OTHERWISE, IF IT GETS DOWN INTO THE CARPET PAD OR THE WOOD GRAIN OR THE VINYL, IT WILL NOT COME OUT COMPLETELY.

WHENEVER THE HUMIDITY IS HIGH OR THE AREA IS CLOSED OFF, YOU WILL SMELL THE URINE.

The only way to get out the smell/ stain then is to take up the flooring and start over.
